Knife facts for young people
Some people think that carrying a knife makes them stronger and that they are bigger because they have one. Knives don't protect you at all - think about this:
- Carrying a knife is more dangerous than not carrying one. Many people who carry knives have their weapons used against them.
- Knives are dangerous weapons and there is no such thing as a minor knife wound - they all have the potential to kill, even if they aren't in the chest or head.
- You don't have to stab someone to end up in jail. Just having a knife can put you in jail.
- Nine out of ten people who commit knife crimes are male.1
- Three out of ten knife crime offenders are under 20 while one in seven victims is under 20.1
- Over two thirds of knife crimes take place between 5pm and 5am with the peak time being between 9pm and 11pm.
- A stabbing which takes seconds could sentence you to 10 years in jail or a lifetime of hospital treatment.
- If you are not comfortable with where you are, or who you are with, just leave.
